Railways Announce “Bharat Gaurav” Program to Harness Huge Potential of Tourism

Thematic circuit trains can be operated by private or public operators, Minister said

To exploit the enormous potential of tourism, the railways announced on Tuesday the “Bharat Gaurav” program, under which trains of thematic tourist circuits, on the lines of the Ramayana Express, can be operated by private or public operators. .

“Until now, railways have had passenger segments and freight segments. Now we will have a third segment for tourism – the “Bharat Gaurav” train. We have booked about 3,033 cars or about 150 trains. We invite applications for them from today [Tuesday]Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

The minister said they would not be regular trains that will run on a schedule but will be more on the Ramayana Express lines operated by the IRCTC.

The service providers, which can be an individual, a company, a corporation, a trust, a joint venture or a consortium, will be free to decide on themes / tours like Guru Kripa trains to cover important places of Sikh culture or the Ramayana Express for places related to Lord Ram.

They will offer an all-inclusive package for tourists, including train trips, hotel accommodation and sightseeing, visiting historic / heritage sites, tour guides, etc. and will be free to decide on the cost of the package.

The providers will also be able to design / furnish the interiors of the cars according to the theme and put a brand image or advertising inside and outside the train.

Mr Vaishnaw said the program was developed after lengthy discussions with stakeholders and that many state governments, including Odisha, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, have shown interest.

He said the railroads would charge a small amount, but did not share specific details.
