Business travel is the third largest contributor to tourism

Business tourism is a lucrative segment of meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) and the third largest contributor to tourism in the country, says Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

“Selangor’s attractions and growing MICE business have made the state a top vacation destination.

“In addition to that, Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport are in Selangor, which gives an advantage to the hospitality industry,” he said.

Earlier, Amirudin launched Mercure Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie located in the heart of Glenmarie, Shah Alam, Selangor.

Mercure, which is a new integrated development of Utropolis Glenmarie, is the premier international business hotel in the Glenmarie area, catering to both business and leisure travelers.

Amirudin added that he was happy to see the hospitality sector gaining momentum.

“The global economy is grappling with a crisis on multiple fronts and the supply chain still faces massive disruption with no end in sight.

“Food prices are rising as weather conditions become increasingly uncertain.

“However, we cannot stand still, but we must meet the challenge head on,” he said, stressing that Selangor was resilient and would overcome the challenges of the pandemic and economic problems.

Mercure Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie general manager Ramesh Singh Sappel said he was optimistic about the future of the hotel given its convenient location.

“With all the limitations and challenges faced during the movement control order due to the pandemic, we have created better services to improve hospitality offerings,” he said, adding that all of this was made possible with the support of the Accor team.

He was delighted that Mercure was now a fully functional four-star hotel with 229 elegantly designed rooms, an urban pool lounge with stunning views and facilities to host business and personal events.

Mercure Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie sits within the 8.78 ha Utropolis Glenmarie area, home to the Utropolis Marketplace shopping mall, serviced apartments and a university campus, developed by Paramount Corporation Bhd.

Also present at the event were Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah and Seri Setia MP Halimey Abu Bakar.
